Infrastructure is a set of fundamental facilities and systems that support sustainable functions of households and cities.

There are four major types of infrastructure:

• Blue infrastructure refers to water elements, like rivers, canals, ponds, wetlands, floodplains, water treatment facilities. This term is used in urban planning and land-use planning.
• Green infrastructure mimics Nature and refers to trees, lawns, hedgerows, parks, fields, forests. This term is used for urban planning and land-use planning.
• Gray infrastructure refers to structures such as dams, seawalls, roads, pipes or water treatment plants. Adapting to the escalating impacts of climate breakdown — particularly for coastlines facing sea-level rise and stronger storms — requires changing our infrastructure.
• Social infrastructure are foundational services and structures that support the quality of life of a nation, region, city or neighborhood. This includes any infrastructure that goes beyond basic economic functions to make a community an appealing place to live.
