Tanager-1 is a satellite with advanced technology designed by NASA. It was launched into Earth’s orbit on August 16 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The launch took place at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, and communication with the satellite was successfully established a few hours later.
The satellite is equipped with special technology from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory that allows it to measure methane and carbon dioxide emissions from specific locations around the world. This helps track the sources of these greenhouse gases, which are important for understanding and fighting climate change.
Tanager-1 is part of a project led by the nonprofit Carbon Mapper, supported by both public and private funding. The satellite was built by Planet Labs PBC, and the team plans to launch a second satellite with similar technology in the future.
