An internet port is a virtual point where network connections start and end.
Ports allow computers to easily differentiate between different kinds of internet traffic. For example, emails go to a different port than webpages, even though both reach a computer over the same Internet connection.
Internet ports increase network efficiency and can be blocked by firewalls to stop the flow of internet traffic through them, and protect against online threats.
These ports are software-based and managed by a computer’s operating system.
