The term emissions refers to the amount of carbon dioxide, or other greenhouse gasses, released into our atmosphere by a particular activity.
There are two types of emissions, direct and indirect.
-
Direct emissions are released from sources that are directly owned or controlled by a company or entity.
-
Indirect emissions are released as a result of the activities by a company or entity, but occur at sources owned or controlled by another entity.
The GHG Protocol divides emissions into three scopes.
• Scope 1 – direct emissions from sources owned or controlled by a company
• Scope 2 – indirect emissions from purchased electricity, steam, heat, and cooling
• Scope 3 – all other emissions associated with a company’s activities
