An ice shelf is a large floating platform of ice that forms where a glacier, or ice sheet, flows down to a coastline and onto the ocean surface.

The collapse of the Larsen A and B ice shelves on the eastern Antarctic Peninsula in 1995 and 2002, accelerated the flow of ice toward the ocean, contributing to sea-level rise.

Global warming has increased the rate of the melting of polar ice, which (among other consequences) leads to an increased rate of sea level rise.
