Glaciers are massive, dense ice formations that are constantly and very slowly moving under their own weight. A glacier forms where the amount of snow exceeds melting over many years, usually over centuries.
Our warming climate is causing glaciers to melt at much faster rates. One-third of the world’s most iconic glaciers have been “condemned to disappear” within 23 years, according to a new report by the United Nations.
Rapid glacial melting is a leading cause of sea level rise.
