Ecocide is the act of people destroying the environmental resources on which their lives and societies depend on, by either deliberate or negligent human action.
In a criminal context, it is defined as unlawful or reckless acts committed with the knowledge that there is a high likelihood of causing severe damage to the environment.
Ten nations have codified ecocide as a crime, and it has been proposed that ecocide be punishable by the International Criminal Court.
