Permafrost is any ground that remains completely frozen for at least two years straight.

These permanently frozen grounds are most common in regions with high mountains and in Earth’s higher latitudes—near the North and South Poles.

As our climate warms, permafrost is thawing at unprecedented rates. When permafrost thaws, organic matter is broken down by bacteria, and the greenhouse gasses carbon dioxide and methane are released into the atmosphere, causing further warming.
