Permeable pavement is a paved surface with a higher than normal number of air voids, to allow water to pass through it and infiltrate into the subsoil.
This porous surface replaces traditional pavement allowing stormwater runoff from a parking lot, driveway, and roadway to infiltrate directly into the soil.
Using porous pavement creates a natural filtration system, prevents flooding and reduces the heat island effect.
Permeable pavement is an example of green infrastructure.
