The Amery Ice Shelf is the third largest ice shelf in Antarctica.
Global warming has increased the rate of the melting of polar ice, which (among other consequences) leads to an increased rate of sea level rise. Ice shelves are protective covers over the Earth and our oceans, these bright spots of ice reflect excess heat back into space and keep our planet cooler.
In theory, the Arctic remains colder than the equator because more of the heat from the sun is reflected off of the ice, back into space.
In September 2019, a large iceberg known as D-28 split from the shelf, and continues to threaten shipping channels. In May of 2021, D-28 collided with the Dog’s Head Landing Site, a landing stage used for years by the Belgian Antarctic Program.
