Methane is a chemical that’s the main component of natural gas, a common fossil fuel source.
Just like carbon dioxide, methane is a greenhouse gas that traps heat in the atmosphere. It has a high global warming potential (gwp) of about 28, meaning it has an impact on global warming that is 28 times stronger than that of the same mass of carbon dioxide.
Methane accounts for about 10 percent of all US greenhouse gas emissions (using 2013 figures), second only to carbon dioxide.
